It was not clear if the officer making the stop was the officer killed.

Those officers immediately faced gunfire - and two were hit by it, Parker said and Fox News reported.

Other drivers ran for cover and two people were slightly injured as dozens of bullets flew shortly after 5:30 p.m. Monday just off a freeway in Riverside, east of Los Angeles.

The officer was filling out paperwork when the suspect took a rifle from his own vehicle and shot Moye, officials said.

While authorities did not immediately release the names of the slain CHP officer or the man with the rifle, family members identified the deceased officer as 33-year-old Andre Moye Jr., who was married and had been with the CHP for about four years, KABC-TV reported.

In video footage that has been released, you can see a white pick up truck where the alleged gunman is harbored with a reported assault rifle.

Moye had served CHP's Riverside station for about three years after graduating from academy in March 2017, department officials said Tuesday. In the end, three officers (including Moye) were wounded, while two bystanders had minor injuries, CHP said. "One of our officers succumbed to the injuries sustained".

Other officers arrived and started shooting, Parker said, eventually hitting and killing the suspect.

At least two CHP vehicles had visible gunshot damage in the rear windshields at the scene.

Several motorists were struck by glass shards when bullets hit their auto windows, officials said, and were treated by paramedics at the scene.

Railsback says one of the officers was airlifted to a hospital by a local sheriff's department helicopter.

Officer Moye is survived by his wife, Sara, father, mother, stepfather, brothers and sisters.

Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered flags at half-staff Tuesday in the state Capitol. Officers from multiple law enforcement agencies descended on the overpass and a "long and horrific gun battle" ensued, Riverside police Chief Sergio Diaz said.

"That is all going to be part of this lengthy investigation", he said.
