Amazon Studios has ordered a live-action series based on Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang's Paper Girls series in what was described as a "competitive" bidding situation, according to Deadline. The series is being produced by Plan B and Legendary TV; which recently signed Vaughan to a development deal.

Toy Story 4 co-writer Stephany Folsom will be the showrunner and primary writer of Paper Girls.

Vaughan is best known for co-creating Marvel's Runaways and Y: The Last Man at Vertigo. Runaways is now a series on Hulu, while FX is preparing to go forward with its Y adaptation.

Almost 30 issues of the sci-fi saga, illustrated by Cliff Chiang, have been released since October 2015.

The comic follows four girls from 1988 who suddenly find themselves in the middle of a war being waged between time travellers.

Unusual things are happening at Amazon. Could Paper Girls be Amazon's ticket to that golden 1980s nostalgia paradise? We'll just have to wait and see!

Paper Girls - colored by Matt Wilson, with lettering by Jared K. Fletcher, and flatting by Dee Cunniffe - has garnered both critical and commercial acclaim, including two Eisner Awards in 2016. Here's a review we wrote of the series a year ago. Okay. Fine, we'll be patient. for now.
