Man Utd Close In On Signing Sean Longstaff

Manchester United and Newcastle United have now held talks over the transfer of midfielder Sean Longstaff, according to Sky Sports News.

Premier League giants Manchester United are reportedly closing in on their third summer signing.

Sources have told ESPN FC that chief negotiator Matt Judge, head of corporate development, spoke to Newcastle managing director Lee Charnley over the weekend but a formal bid was not submitted because the two clubs are so far apart.

Leicester are demanding £90m for the England centre-back but United are hoping to strike a deal around the £75m figure that Liverpool paid Southampton for Virgil van Dijk a year ago.

Longstaff, 21, is desperate to move to Old Trafford after his representatives shelved contract negotiations with Newcastle in March, but has been left in the dark as talks continue.

Although United recognise they are operating in an inflated market and there is a premium on young British players, there is some concern that there is nearly an additional tax on players they are interested in signing.

'We're still in the market looking to do some business but we're patient, ' said Solskjaer. You have to have the right players at the right price'.

Solskjaer put his players through a double training session for the second time in three days at the WACA on Thursday with the second workout taking place in front of 12,000 fans.

Keeping Longstaff would be a rare chink of life in a summer which has been nothing short of dire, but if United come forward with the kind of money they threw at Aaron Wan-Bissaka, it would not be a surprise to see Newcastle cave.
