Helander now plays for Bologna in Serie A but he is on the move this summer.

Fellow Turkish outfit Besiktas are also closely monitoring the situation but are yet to make a concrete offer.

The Swede has impressed for the Serie A side in recent seasons after joining from Hellas Verona. "However, the 6'4" defender prefers a transfer to Scotland over Turkey. Newcastle United were also credited with an interest in September past year.

McPake has signed on the dotted line until the summer of 2022, meaning he will stay at Rangers beyond his 20th birthday.

Helander will become the fourth central defender on Rangers' books if this deal goes through.

"It is unbelievable for the confidence, from day one the gaffer has told us we have an important season up ahead".

"If things progress as they have in the last 48 hours, I'm hoping something will be done by the end of the week".

The 26-year-old former Malmo and Verona player has 10 global caps.

He joined Bologna in 2016 and has played 63 games for I Rossoblu, scoring once, but found himself in and out of the team during the last campaign after Sinisa Mihajlovic succeeded Filippo Inzaghi as head coach.

It'll also be the eighth player that Gerrard has brought into the club this summer, as he aims to win the Scottish Premiership next season. On his return, he struggled to hold down a starting berth, and featured from the start in just three further matches.

Joe Worrall and Gareth McAuley both left Rangers at the end of last season so Gerrard needed two new centre-backs.

"I have three years left on my contract in Bologna, it really is so I look at it", he said while on worldwide duty last month.
