The Red Sox issued a health update on Ortiz on behalf of his wife, Tiffany.

Former Boston Red Sox star David Ortiz underwent additional surgery as he continues to recover from a gunshot wound sustained more than a month ago.

Ortiz was shot and immediately taken to a hospital in the Dominican Republic before being flown to Boston for further treatment. Ortiz's wife didn't give specific details in regards to the complications although she did note that he is "recovering well and in good spirits".

"We continue to be incredibly appreciative of the kindness and compassion shown to David and to our entire family during this hard time", Ortiz's wife said.

Police said 14 people have been arrested in the case and they were searching for others. Ortiz was able to receive medical attention on the scene and was brought to the hospital for surgery.

Once in Boston, Ortiz underwent a second surgery on June 10.

Dominican Republic police said on June 19 that Ortiz was not the intended target of the shooting. The Red Sox retired his number, 34, in 2017, and a bridge and a stretch of road outside Fenway Park are named after him.

Fernandez and Ortiz were sitting at the same table and dressed similarly at the time of the shooting, police said.

Ferreira-Cruz remains in custody in the Dominican Republic.

The alleged mastermind of the shooting, Victor Hugo Gomez, was arrested after the botched murder plot, which was meant as a hit on his cousin.
