Prince Philip has turned 98, and members of the royal family have been celebrating the milestone on social media. Just before the wedding, he was made the Duke of Edinburgh, Earl of Merioneth and Baron Greenwich.

He married the Queen of England in the year 1947.

Prince Philip chose to celebrate his June 10 birthday privately this year.

Happy birthday to the Duke of Edinburgh! The second, a throwback from 1950 when Philip was in his mid-30s dancing with his wife, Queen Elizabeth, then only Princess Elizabeth. But perhaps he was merely conserving his energy for his own birthday celebrations-which include being inundated with social media posts in his honor. From his charitable work to his marriage to the Queen, take a look back at the royal life of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. "I found a couple of classic photographs of Grandpa and I on Christmas Day and Trooping the Colour a few years ago now".

Some of Philip's children and grandchildren also posted tributes.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge wished Philip many happy returns by sharing some lovely photos on Twitter and Instagram with the caption: "Wishing a very Happy 98th Birthday to His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh!"

The Duke of Edinburgh was not present on the famous balcony at Buckingham Palace, as he retired from public duties aged 96 in 2017, having completed 22,219 solo engagements since 1952. "Some royal staff had tears in their eyes as he walked off along the forecourt".

The Queen and Philip recently welcomed a new great-grandchild - their eighth - with the birth of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's son, Archie Mountbatten-Windsor.
