Former world number one Maria Sharapova confirmed on Monday that she will play at next week's Mallorca Open after more than three months out through injury. After pulling out of the St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy after the first round due to a problem with the joint, she announced a month later that she was recovering from a "small procedure" in her shoulder.

"After more than a week testing in Mallorca, Maria Sharapova has chose to accept the wildcard offered by the Mallorca Open", the statement said.

Other competitors in Mallorca will include Wimbledon champion Angelique Kerber and shock 17-year-old French Open semi-finalist Amanda Anisimova. In February, she underwent what she called a "small procedure" in hopes of dealing with the issue that had been causing her pain since previous year. "Although my shoulder got strong, it didn't help the pain on impact".

"I want to thank the tournament for the opportunity it gives me and all my incredible fans who have supported me in recent months", he added.

Venus Williams is another former Wimbledon champion taking preparation for this year's fortnight at SW19 seriously. The elder Williams sister maintains hope of a first title since 2016, which would bring her to 50 career titles.
