Lowe, who was named the Parkrose high school head football coach back in February 2018, saw the suspect carrying a gun and tackled that person before what was meant to happen, happened.

"Officers arrived and determined that a Parkrose High School staff member had wrestled the suspect to the ground", PPB said in a brief statement. There were no other suspects.

"Incidents such as the one that occurred today strikes the worst fear in the hearts of students and parents", said Chief Danielle Outlaw.

Portland Police Sgt. Brad Yakots said Friday that no one was injured and one person has been taken into custody.

"I'm blessed to be alive and extremely happy that the students are safe".

Lowe didn't reply to messages sent on Twitter or LinkedIn. "Additionally, there will be an enhanced security presence to provide a sense of comfort to our students and staff".

The suspect, wearing a black trench-coat, appeared in the doorway of a classroom in Parkrose High School in Portland, Oregon, and pulled the gun from beneath his coat.

Students alerted school officials that a classmate had displayed troubling behavior in recent days, intimating a desire to hurt himself and acquire firearms, according to The Oregonian.

Parents were told to head to a nearby K-Mart parking lot to pick up their children.

While police have not officially confirmed that Lowe was the man who stopped the shooter, an Associated Press report of the event noted that the gunman was detained by a staff member.

Police have identified the suspect as Angel Granados Dias, 18.

The student didn't point the gun at anyone, senior Alexa Pope said.

Students fled out the back door because the gunman was blocking the main doorway.

Lowe was a standout receiver for the University of OR and played for the Ducks between 2010 and 2014, according to the school's athletic website. He caught 10 touchdown passes and had almost 900 receiving yards.

Officers continue to be on the scene, and PPB said that its Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT) had been activated.

"I'm just happy everyone was OK", the former analyst for the San Francisco 49ers and Philadelphia Eagles reportedly said. Lowe is the school's football coach.

The high school and nearby Parkrose Middle School are on lockdown. Lowe is an athletic coach at the school now, and a security guard.
