All five people on board were killed after the plane plummeted shortly after takeoff from the popular tourist destination of Roatan en route to the port of Trujillo.

The private jet plunged into the sea soon after leaving Roatan island, a tourist destination on the Atlantic coast.

Local authorities said that four of the victims are Canadian nationals while the nationality of one of the victims is yet to be identified. Armed Forces spokesman Jose Domingo Meza confirmed the nationalities of those who died, which included a Canadian pilot.

The pilot's sister, Jenna Forseth, spoke to local media, saying her brother was "well-loved" in the area and "the whole town is in mourning".

The US State Department confirmed the deaths of four US citizens and Global Affairs Canada confirmed that of the Canadia.

Forseth, who was from British Columbia but lived in Honduras, was a pilot, but it wasn't immediately clear if he was flying the plane at the time of the crash. He is listed as being associated with Carivida Vacation Tours, located in Trujillo.

Maron added that Global Affairs's thoughts are with the Canadian citizen's friends and family.

On Sunday, the State Department said four of those killed were US citizens and that the USA embassy in the Honduran capital of Tegucigalpa is providing assistance.

The Honduran Military said that rescue boats with police divers and firemen recovered the body within minutes of the crash.
