Separately, one person died when a vehicle was submerged in floodwaters in Calhoun, also near Monroe.

A county employee died after being struck by a vehicle while he was helping clear away trees about 2:15 a.m. Sunday near the Birmingham suburb of Hueytown, said Capt. David Agee of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office. His name was not immediately released.

"It looks like a storm came up through Louisiana and into MS and exploded in Monroe County", Monroe County Sheriff Cecil Cantrell said.

There was widespread damage in Alto, a town of about 1,200, and the school district canceled classes until its buildings can be inspected to ensure they are safe.

The threat of severe weather will likely increase throughout the day, the National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center said.

The watch came just hours after an earlier line of severe weather brought a few possible tornadoes to parts of north Georgia.

Two people were hospitalized for injuries not thought to be life-threatening, while others were treated at the scene for minor injuries, Yezak said. The main severe weather threats will be damaging wind gusts, tornadoes and large hail.

Tornado warnings remained in effect on Sunday for southeastern Alabama's Barbour and Russell counties, Oravec said. Multiple people were injured and several homes were damaged in Hamilton, Mississippi, said Monroe County Coroner Alan Gurley.

Local emergency management officials say one person is dead after a tornado swept through a northern MS town late Saturday.

One person was killed in northeastern MS when a tree crashed onto his trailer, Monroe County Road Manager Sonny Clay said at a news conference, adding that a tornado had struck. Another 19 were taken to hospitals, including two who were in critical condition. Trees were reported down in each location but there were no immediate reports of damage, injuries or fatalities.

"The main threat will be damaging winds with the line, but an isolated tornado and isolated instances of flooding can not be ruled out as well", National Weather Service forecasters said.

ABC News reported two more deaths after a tornado ripped through Hamilton, Mississippi.

Falls County officials said that agencies would be reporting to Robertson County to assist after reports of people trapped, several injuries and damaged buildings. A tornado was reported in the area at the time.

At least one tornado was reported in southeast Alabama early Sunday, as CNN meteorologist Haley Brink said as many as 90 million people could be threatened by the storms.
