President Trump said Monday he is awarding Tiger Woods the Presidential Medal of Freedom after his remarkable comeback to win the Masters on Sunday after a 14-year drought.

Woods will become just the fourth golfer to receive the award.

Previous recipients include Michael Jordan, Muhammad Ali, Jesse Owens, Billie Jean King and fellow golfers Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer.

Trump did not in his tweet specify when the ceremony will take place. The Medal "recognizes those individuals who have made 'an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors'".

Mr. Trump owns a dozen golf courses in the USA and frequently spends his weekends at his clubs in Florida, Virginia or New Jersey.

Trump and Woods have both spoken publicly about having played many rounds of golf together over the years and Trump praised Woods on a handful of occasions in recent years.

Trump has presented the Medal of Freedom to numerous athletes since taking office, including Alan Page, Roger Staubach, and a posthumous award to Babe Ruth.
