Oh, and this package can be had on the fastback or convertible, with the base cloth or upgraded leather interior. The mill is put together in Valencia, Spain, before being shipped over to Flat Rock.

"The Ford Performance Focus RS 2.3-liter engine is a high-revving marvel, and anyone who's driven this EcoBoost engine instantly loves how quickly it responds and delivers power", said Carl Widmann, Mustang chief engineer.

Ford is dipping into the Mustang heritage pool (not to mention its parts bin) once again with a new High Performance package for the 2.3L EcoBoost Mustang.

The Ford Mustang's active exhaust is also standard with quad tips and, lest you think it'll sound like a puny pea shooter, Ford started it up. The vehicle is also now electronically limited to 155 miles per hour and gets ducting from the Mustang GT to improve brake cooling. There's also a 3.55 ratio limited-slip rear differential.

The new front splitter and belly pan and brake cooling ramps are borrowed from the Mustang GT.

Autocrossers will also want to check the box marked 60E for the handling package, available only on the fastback, with the manual or automatic transmission.

An optional handling package is available only on coupe versions of the new model, adding magnetorheological dampers, 9.5-inch-wide wheels (they're normally 9.0 inches wide), a 24-mm solid rear anti-roll bar (up from 21.7 mm), 265/40ZR-19 Pirelli P Zero Corsa 4 tires, stiffer springs, and a Torsen limited-slip diff. The SYNC3 system is an extra and adds improved voice recognition, 911 assist and two USB ports.

Along with the rest of the model line, the new variant gets updated Sync 3 infotainment, plus four new paint colors: Twister Orange, Grabber Lime, Iconic Silver, and Red Hot. Pricing hasn't been announced, but it should end up in the $30,000 range and compete head-to-head with the Camaro Turbo 1LE for the hearts and minds of 4-cylinder muscle auto fans when it goes on sale this fall.

For a relatively modest power gain - around 20bhp if you compare it to a US-spec Ecoboost - it seems rather a lot of work, but its engineers claim the new breadth of its power delivery is more impressive than some slightly larger numbers on a spec sheet.
