After denying that tensions with head judge Shirley Ballas, 58, had anything to do with her exit, Darcey, 49, also dismissed further reports this week that she left over the show's love "scandals" and pay issues.

Cheryl has a long history of lending her expertise to judging panels, infamously being on the X Factor for many years before joining new show, The Greatest Dancer in 2018.

"Thank you for holding my hand all the way and being such an incredible friend".

"I for one will dearly miss my partner in crime and our girly chats". She's got a life to lead - she's a Dame, she doesn't need it.

In a now-deleted tweet, he added: "I will treasures all the time we spent together on and off screen".

Cheryl was a judge on The Greatest Dancer, and many have tipped her to make the move to Strictly this year.

The statement read: "It has been a complete privilege for me to be part of Strictly, working with such a talented team".

I am just stepping away to give more focus to my many other commitments in dance.

Speaking to Jamie Theakston and Lucy Horobin on Heart Breakfast, she said of Darcey's departure: It's sad.

And when asked who she thought might replace Darcey, Katie predicted Oti Mabuse.

She previously told Digital Spy that she would "will always have allegiance to Strictly" and that "if ever there is the opportunity" to be a part of the show again then she would "never say no". "I've got a very good body for it".

Charlotte Moore, director of BBC content, said: "It has been an absolute honour to have Darcey, a national treasure and British dance icon, bring her passion for dance and her graceful presence to the Strictly Come Dancing judging panel for seven consecutive years".

"Fueled by insider comments, some arrived at the unfounded conclusion that she had become exhausted of "'the Bruno show' and felt the dynamic between the judges changed after Craig's jibes at Shirley's cosmetic surgery".

They also said that Darcey thinks the show has become "some sort of sleazy soap opera" and that she "hates the show's never-ending rumours" when it comes to the romances between dancers and celebrities.
