The owner of a fertility clinic used his own sperm to father 49 children, according to DNA tests revealed on Friday. The doctor inseminated his patients with his sperm instead of using or thatthe chosen donor.

The tests revealed Dr Karbaat had impregnated the women at his clinic near Rotterdam and the results were confirmed earlier this year after Rotterdam District Court allowed their release.

Karbaat's clinic was closed down in 2009 due to allegations he generated false data, analyses and donor descriptions, as well as exceeding the limit of six children per donor.

The controversial case came became public after a Dutch court ruled in February that the results of Karbaat's DNA test should be made available to parents and children to conduct their own comparisons.

Now, one of the children, named Joey, told Dutch broadcaster NOS that he could "finally close the chapter" now that he knew the identity of his father.

Almost 50 children have received closure following years of anguish after they were told their biological father was a doctor who impregnated their mother at his fertility clinic.

But legal representatives for the Karbaat's family argued that judges must respect their clients' right to having a private life.

"After years of uncertainty, the plaintiffs are finally closing a period and they can start processing the fact that they are one of [his] many descendants".

A group of the doctor's suspected children and their parents took Karbaat to court in 2017 following suspicions that they may all be related.

"Sperm belonging to the late doctor was also distributed to other clinics", Dutch news agency ANP quoted the organisation as saying.

"I don't get the feeling that he cheated my mother", he told the NRC paper.
