Oakland County Confirms 8 Cases of Measles; Concerns Arise About Spread

Eight more people have contracted measles in Oakland County, the state health department said Friday morning, bringing the total up to 9.

Measles is a highly contagious, viral disease that is spread through the air when a person sick with the disease coughs or sneezes.

Vaccines are free at your local community health centre.

Measles vaccinations are available on a drop in basis at the South Cariboo Health Center and the Williams Lake Health Center. Other states, including Missouri, have more stringent laws that allow for religious exemptions to vaccines. Symptoms typically begin 1-2 weeks after exposure, but can take as long as 21 days to appear.

The disease is spreading nationally.

A first reported case of the disease was on March 13, when the MDHHS confirmed an individual had visited NY and Israel before returning to MI.

"As we see, maybe, fewer people getting vaccinated, we continue to see more cases", Leigh-Anne Stafford, a health officer in Oakland County, said.

Call ahead to your doctor's office or the hospital if you think you may have been exposed to measles and have developed symptoms.

Interior Health says the case is connected to the first case confirmed March 9th. Officials believe that case is linked to the four other confirmed and three suspected cases in the county.
