Ford: Electric Mustang-Inspired SUV Will Challenge Tesla Model Y

Problem is, it seems not that many people noticed, at least not when it happened last week, on March 14, the same time Tesla revealed the Model Y.

The company posted a Twitter teaser showing a blue glowing pony logo within minutes of Tesla's Model Y launch event, captioning the photo with "Hold your horses". Now, according to an anonymous Ford executive speaking to CNBC, the auto company is suggesting it has some big things planned for its own electric vehicle program.

This was a clear reference to a terse announcement Ford made at the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit held from January 13 to 28. The Ford Motor Company plans to roll out the Mach E as soon as April 2019.

President of Global Operations Joe Hinrichs now says Ford is moving quickly toward producing what it keeps describing as a "Mustang-inspired" all-electric SUV. The timing of the tweet was spot on though, as it directly lined up with the Model Y's grand reveal.

To be clear, making a Mustang-based SUV will be huge for the vehicle company, which is reportedly trying to follow a broader shift in the market from sedans and coupes to SUVs and CUVs. Ford and established rivals are presumably scrambling to beat Tesla to market with long-range all-electric crossovers.

Ford has already set aside resources to build the Mustang BEV. The investment also includes funding to build the next-generation Mustang.
