The 71-year-old host stopped by the show to promote the new season of Netflix show My Next Guest - and revealed the time he was convinced he was going to spend his life in prison.

"I'm disappointed in his administration", David Letterman told Ellen Degeneres in an interview Thursday.

Letterman says it turns out nobody had the guts to fire him. "You want to make sure you have some energy to direct toward other things". All I cared about was myself'.

"I had to realize, 'Oh, I've been looking through the wrong end of the telescope,"' he said.

Elsewhere on the programme, the presenter - who now hosts "My Next Guest Needs No Introduction" on Netflix - recalled a amusing incident in a hotel that left him convinced he was going to be sent to prison.

She warned viewers that people wore "big clothes" in that era, before showing the clip where she was wearing a large brown coat, telling a joke about a fly on a plane.

Letterman's interview also sees him play a game of "Burning Questions", with one of the questions asking the star what he'd say to Donald Trump if he were to interview him again.

In a 2017 interview with GQ magazine, Letterman said Trump "makes me sick", even though he once valued him as a guest on his show.
