Why Manchester United’s Champions League quarter-final dates could be reversed

In other news, UEFA have confirmed that if Man United and Man City both draw the same home and away sequence for the Champions League quarter-finals, it will the Man United game which will be shifted because they finished behind City in the Premier League last season.

United and City will discover the identity of their quarter-final opponents when the draw for the last eight is made in Nyon on Friday morning.

"Following a decision made by relevant local authorities, Manchester City and Manchester United can not play at home on the same night, nor on consecutive nights", UEFA said (as reported).

In accordance with paragraph 21.01 (b) of the UEFA Champions League regulations, the UEFA administration will determine which matches will be played on Tuesday, which matches on Wednesday.

Although they won't say so publicly, behind closed doors Barcelona players are quite sure about who they would rather face in the quarter finals of the Champions League, after seeing off Olympique Lyon this week.

In the Europa League round of 16 draw, both Arsenal and Chelsea were drawn at home but UEFA ruled to reschedule Arsenal's first-leg tie against Rennes after Chelsea finished in a higher position in the league last season.

Liverpool made it a ideal four for English clubs in the UEFA Champions League this season as they beat Bayern Munich to join Manchester United, Manchester City and Tottenham in the quarterfinals. United had won the title the previous season, with City in third, but both clubs dropped into the Europa League from the Champions League group stage.

'The calendar for the semi-finals (including a potential reversal involving Manchester United FC, for the same reasons, if both clubs from Manchester are still remaining in the competition) will be communicated to all parties on 18 April 2019, following the return legs of the quarter-finals'.
