Tottenham have reportedly resigned to losing Toby Alderweireld to Manchester United this summer in what is surely a huge transfer boost for those at Old Trafford.

Former United manager Jose Mourinho wanted to sign the centre-back last summer but was unable to secure the necessary funds from his board.

The Premier League club have not signed a single player in the last two transfer windows.

Ball-playing centre-back Alderweireld has proven himself to be one of the best in his position in Europe over the past couple of seasons.

Alderweireld will be available for just £26 million - the value of his new release clause - this summer after the club made a decision to extend his contract back in January.

Manchester United's defence has looked fragile throughout the season and while there have been some signs of improvement since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over towards the end of the past year, there is no denying that the 20-time English champions could do with bringing in a natural leader at the back.

But they may not have a choice, given some of the players who will be leaving in the summer.

According to The Mirror, Manchester United are leading the race for the 30-year-old's signature, although Barcelona and Juventus are also interested.

Spurs would undoubtedly have to spend big - whether that is possible, especially after the construction of the new stadium, remains to be seen.
