According to a tweet by Greta Thunberg, the 16-year-old young woman who sparked the movement, there will be close to 1800 separate strikes in 112 countries today - with, one would imagine, tens of thousands of strike sites.

Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai in 2014 became the youngest victor of the prize, at the age of 17.

Following the #FridaysForFuture movement, started by the Swedish teen, Jodi is calling on Derry students to "strike" tomorrow between 1pm and 3pm and gather in Guildhall Square to make their voices heard about the state of the earth they, as young people, will inherit.

"We have proposed Greta Thunberg because if we do nothing to halt climate change it will be the cause of wars, conflict and refugees", said Norwegian Socialist MP Freddy André Øvstegård.

While numerous protesters are likely to be university students, a large number are also expected to be high school students.

Greta's weekly protests have also sparked similar events in Germany, Australia, Japan, Belgium, and France.

But Friday's protest is billed as the biggest so far.

The Nobel Peace Prize past year went to Congo's Denis Mukwege and Iraq's Nadia Murad for "their efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war and armed conflict", according to the Nobel Committee's ruling.

Thousands of school students walked out of class across New Zealand on Friday kicking off a global student strike against government inaction on climate change.

Since then, she has been missing lessons most Fridays to stage her regular protests. "Let's take action to raise awareness on Climate Change". Any person who meets the nomination criteria is considered.

How is the Nobel Peace Prize nominated and chosen?

The prize is announced in October and awarded in December in the Norwegian capital, Oslo.

This year's Nobel Peace Prize has 304 candidates, of which 219 are individuals and 85 organisations, the Norwegian Nobel Committee reported last month.

The names of nominators and nominees are not normally made public until 50 years have elapsed, it adds.
