"It's a very special win today", Kohlschreiber said after the match. "But it's everything I could do today". Djokovic said. "But it just happens, one of those days".

He came out with a crisp, confident style, breaking Djokovic in the seventh game and closing out the opening set with a service victor.

Djokovic, however, was back in court an hour after his singles defeat as he teamed up with Italian Fabio Fognini in the doubles.

Djokovic and Fognini got the first break of the match when they broke Rojer and Tecau in the fifth game to take a 3-2 first-set lead. And he knows how to win matches?

The German will play Frenchman Gael Monfils for a place in the quarterfinals. Djokovic's chief rivals Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer breezed into the Round of 16 with straight sets win.

In addition to the top seed falling on the women's side of the draw, the second seed, Simona Halep lost to teenager Marketa Vondrousova 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. But I feel pretty good right now, because I tried my best and I don't really have any regrets.

"I congratulate him for playing tactically really well and getting me out of my comfort zone", Djokovic said. "So these are the rare occasions where I could potentially do well", Djokovic said. "I tried to be positive throughout the entire match".

The world No.33 crashed out of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells with a 6-4 6-4 loss to Philip Kohlschreiber in the second round (his first match of the tournament) on Monday.

Defeat was hard to take for Djokovic - who returned to win in the doubles later on Tuesday - but he was not dwelling on it, particularly with another big tournament on the horizon.

"Don't remind me of the stats", Wawrinka quipped after pulling off a marathon victory over Hungarian Marton Fucsovics. In other action, Dominic Inglot and Franko Skugor rallied to beat fourth seeds Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan 3-6, 6-3, 10-3.

He will play Serbia's Filip Krajinovic next after Krajinovic, ranked 113, beat 15th seed Daniil Medvedev 6-3 6-2.

Bencic - who beat four top-10 players on the way to the title in Dubai last month, her first trophy in four years - next faces fifth-seeded Czech Karolina Pliskova, who downed Anett Kontaveit 7-6 (10/8), 4-6, 6-2.

Hurzack, ranked 67 in the world, fought back to beat Japanese sixth seed Kei Nishikori 4-6 6-4 6-3.
