Verizon's 5G network to launch April 11 in two U.S. cities

"The only way to make it competitive is to allow T-Mobile to acquire scale and capacity that would in turn allow them to challenge Verizon in the 5G market and with lower prices", Jonathan Chaplin, analyst at New Street Research, wrote in a note.

Regardless of how you get the Moto Z3 and the 5G Moto Mod, it will cost you $10 per month on top of your existing Verizon unlimited plan payments to access 5G. Verizon has not said exactly how fast the 5G mobile service will be at launch. Only one of the current 4G devices in the carrier's lineup can be upgraded to 5G, and that's what Verizon is essentially offering its subscribers.

Verizon will charge an extra $10 per month for smartphone users to access its 5G network. That will change soon with the Moto Z3 and its 5G Moto Mod. If the merger is blocked, Verizon will have less competition dominating the 5G market in the U.S. AT&T is also upgrading its networks to 5G. Verizon would not say how 5G pricing would work with those phones. Though 5G will be a hot topic this year, there's a lot we don't know yet. The promise of "no data de-prioritization" also applies only to the Moto Mod and early launch cities. Tough luck! You won't be getting 5G yet. But Samsung has yet to announce a release date for it. If you don't pre-order, the retail price is $349 when it arrives April 11.

Verizon said 5G service in Chicago will be available in the Loop, the Magnificent Mile, Gold Coast, River North, and Old Town. In Minneapolis, the initial coverage areas are Downtown West, Downtown East, Elliot Park and close to the Verizon store in the Mall of America. "Not all 5G networks are the same", Malady said in a statement.

What happens if you aren't in a 5G area?

The 5G Moto Mod - which snaps on the back of the otherwise 4G LTE Motorola Moto Z3 - will go up for pre-order tomorrow, March 14. If you already own a Moto Z3, then great! Verizon is waiving the $10 fee for the first 3 months too. More information on the Motorola phone and 5G device is available at this Verizon FAQ.
