In the rapidly expanding world of beer brands and craft breweries, Upstate New York still finds itself home to a handful of the biggest beer companies in the United States.

According to the Brewers Association, New Glarus Brewing ranked as the 16th-best craft brewery in the country based on beer sales volume. Ninkasi in 2017 was 38th, and Rogue was 32nd.

Of the top 50 overall brewing companies, 40 are craft breweries.

The rankings are based on sales volume. Yuengling also came in 6th in the list of Overall Brewing Companies.

The association's full 2018 industry analysis, which shows regional trends and sales by individual breweries, will be published in the May/June issue of The New Brewer, available in May 2019. It was followed by MillerCoors (Miller, Coors, Henry Weinhard's, Hop Valley), Constellation (Ballast Point, Corona, Modelo, Pacifico), Heinekin (Heinekin, Lagunitas) and Pabst Brewing (Pabst Blue Ribbon, Olympia, Rainier).

The Brewers Association defines craft breweries as those producing six million barrels of beer or less each year. Of the four breweries that landed in the national rankings, Deschutes was first in OR sales with over 66,000 barrels, followed by Ninkasi (3rd, at 50,227 barrels), Full Sail (7th, 22,505) then Rogue (12th, at 17,939).

The top five USA craft brewers remain unchanged from last year's list: these are D.G. Yuengling & Son (Pottsville, PA); Boston Beer Co (Boston, MA); Sierra Nevada Brewing Co.
