Facebook is now down with people all around the globe having difficulty accessing the world's largest social network.

Both Facebook and Instagram are having issues as a blizzard takes aim at Colorado.

Estimates suggest the issue began around 1600 GMT.

Downdetector, an online site that monitors reports of trouble on a variety of internet businesses, provides a one page look at graphs representing trouble reports.

And while the company acknowledged the problem, it didn't immediately provide answers about the cause or when the service might return to normal.

The outage is occurring against a political backdrop of legislators in the United States and beyond considering whether large technology firms - not just Facebook - should be broken up.

"We're working on getting it fixed as soon as we can", a message told many users as they tried to post content.

"I figured this could happen eventually but it's extremely crippling to be part of this monopoly".

On Twitter, people expressed their frustration.

Some users have posted on Twitter that they're seeing a message saying Facebook is "down for maintenance".

It is still unclear when two of the biggest social media networks will be back up and running.

Users also report that Instagram has inaccessible since the same time, as has Facebook's messaging app Messenger.

As soon as the snag hit, social media users across the globe complained against the outage.
