The state government of Sao Paulo said two teenagers, armed with guns and wearing hoods, entered the school and began shooting at students.

A shooting at a school near Sao Paulo on Wednesday left several people dead, police sources said, with initial reports putting the death toll as high as eight.

Police said the two started shooting at about 9:30 a.m. local time. More than 1,000 children aged between 11 and 15 attend classes there.

Another 17 people - mostly school kids - were shot and injured, and several of them were in serious condition, said police, who were not yet aware of a motive for the violence.

The two shooters committed suicide after the rampage at the school in Suzo, a community near Sao Paulo, the police said. He says authorities don't believe the two were former students.

"I have just received the sad news that children were cruelly murdered in the state school Professor Raul Brasil, in Suzano".

Latin America's largest nation has the largest number of annual homicides in the world, but school shootings are rare.

"When I arrived at the was chaotic". The last major incident of this type occurred back in 2011, when 12 schoolchildren were shot dead in Rio de Janeiro by a former student.
