Snow rolling across eastern Vancouver Island

The heaviest snow for east Vancouver Island is expected on the Malahat Highway, while the heaviest snow for inland Vancouver Island is expected in the Lake Cowichan area.

Winter storm warnings have caused the cancellation of several BC Ferries sailings between the mainland and Vancouver Island.

All schools will be closed Tuesday due to the snow.

The Pat Bay Highway has since reopened from Swartz Bay to Keating Cross Road.

According to DriveBC, there is compact snow between Hamm Road and Cook Creek along 19 to the south, which turns to slush with slippery sections between Sayward Road and Hamm Road heading north. Traffic was stalled around the Alex Fraser Bridge due to hard driving conditions.

Snow fell heavily in Greater Victoria, the southern Gulf Islands, and eastern and inland Vancouver Island.

TransLink spokeswoman Aliya Mohamed said some buses were seeing delays due to snow but that those routes were being monitored.

Homeowners have also been asked to clear and salt any walkways or stairs around their properties, in order to keep Canada Post employees safe.
