Arsenal back in for Mainz 05 defender Jean-Philippe Gbamin?

Now reports have claimed that the manager desperately wants to sign a defender during the summer and the boss has identified Jean-Philippe Gbamin.

The Spaniard enjoyed a positive start to his Arsenal tenure after taking over from the long-serving Arsene Wenger ahead of this season, but the team has stumbled recently and face stiff competition from Chelsea and Manchester United for the fourth and final Champions League place.

The Gunners were forced to rely on a loan signing to bring Denis Suarez to the club in January and reports have suggested they will only have £40m to spend this summer.

It could therefore be the case that the Ivory Coast worldwide drops back into a central defensive role, an area in which the North Londoners have notoriously struggled not just during the current campaign, but over the past five years or more. The Gunners have conceded the most number of goals among the current top-eight of the Premier League and are the only club to have failed to secure a single clean sheet away from home this season.

Gbamin is an Ivorian global who now plays for Bundesliga side Mainz. He is able to play at the heart of the defence as well as in a holding midfield role.

Referring to the failed transfer last summer, Gbamin added: "Of course, the stance of the club initially frustrated me". However, they are set to go back with another offer in the next window.

Gbamin, who is wanted by a host of Premier League clubs, came through the ranks at Lens before moving to German outfit Mainz.

"Through my achievements, I have made clubs aware of me, where I see a good chance to go to this next stage in my sporting and personal development".

And it looks like the Arsenal boss will renew his attempts to sign Gbamin as the Mirror claims we're continuing to monitor his progress and will launch another move to sign the talented defender at the end of the season.

Gbamin is contracted with Mainz till the summer of 2023. It now remains to be seen if Arsenal press ahead with their interest in the versatile defender or pursue alternate targets next summer.
