But no one could have guessed that it would be a billion dollar blockbuster and surpass The Dark Knight Rises' global box office.

According to The Wrap, Warner Bros. has lined up Aquaman screenwriter David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick to write a treatment for the sequel. Johnson-McGoldrick's previous credits include The Walking Dead, Mob City, and The Conjuring 2. It'll be a lower-budget effort looking to key into the scary successes that Aquaman director James Wan has enjoyed. However, it's now unclear if Wan intends to direct the sequel as well. "Aquaman" has over-performed for Warner Bros., coming in above pre-release projections after starting with $68.7 million in its opening weekend in North America.

Warners has writers Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald ready to work on a horror-flavoured film based on the creatures we met in the movie, revealed to be part of the kingdom of Atlantis but cut off from other survivors when it sank and somehow evolving into ravenous monsters.

Directed by James Wan, Aquaman stars Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry, Amber Heard as Mera, Willem Dafoe as Vulko, Patrick Wilson as Orm / Ocean Master, Dolph Lundgren as Nereus, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, Nicole Kidman as Atlanna, Ludi Lin as Captain Murk, and Temuera Morrison as Tom Curry. What do you want to see in Aquaman 2?
