Childish Gambino on Sunday grabbed his fourth Grammy of the night, the coveted Record of the Year prize for best overall song, for his politically charged hit "This Is America".

He was the first artist to be absent from collecting one of the "big four" Grammys since Amy Winehouse in 2008.

"This Is America" beat out "All the Stars" by Kendrick Lamar and SZA, "Boo'd Up" by Ella Mai, "God's Plan" by Drake, "In My Blood" by Shawn Mendes, "The Joke" by Brandi Carlile, "The Middle" by Zedd & Grey feat. Here the rapper dances in the music video for "This Is America".

Co-producer Ludwig Goransson says he tried to call Gambino after the show but it didn't go through.

The Recording Academy has made an effort to diversify its membership amid complaints the Grammys have frequently failed to recognize female and minority artists. "They're getting the same kind of senses as the people".

Rapper Childish Gambino on Sunday scored the Grammy for Best Music Video for his striking "This Is America" clip targeting gun violence and racism.

Rapper 21 Savage, one of the collaborators on the track, was unable to attend the ceremony because he is being detained by United States officials over an expired visa.
