The 22-year-old Russian made light work of Gael Monfils to reach the Sofia Open final on Saturday, notching a 6-2, 6-4 victory to book a final with Marton Fucsovics of Hungary.

Herbert breezed through the opening set but Berdych offered more resistance in the second, only for the former world number four to crack at a key moment.

In the second set, things went on serve and they headed into a tie-breaker in which the Greek took a 5-4 lead before Monfils recovered to win three points in a row to finish off the encounter.

"I want to be better, not everybody reaches number one, but I want to become number one", said Medvedev, who is now 16th in the ATP rankings. "Today, I served very well, this is my best serving day so far".

Marton couldn't find the way to impose his shots from the baseline and Daniil went 2-1 up in the second set with a forehand return victor in game three, repelling two break points at 3-2 to remain in front.

Berrettini downed Spain's Fernando Verdasco 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 while Fucsovics progressed when Roberto Bautista Agut withdrew through injury.

This is set to be the first time that Gael Monfils and Daniil Medvedev will be playing each other at an ATP event.

Medvedev broke for 2-1 in the second set with a perfectly angled crosscourt forehand return.

Berdych, who is unseeded at the tournament he won in 2012, then turned the match around.

However, the 20-year-old came unstuck on Friday against the world number 33.

Berdych beat Herbert in their only previous meeting, earlier this year in the quarter-finals of the Doha Open.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga hit 18 aces, but needed four match points to beat seventh-seeded Jeremy Chardy 6-7 (6/8), 7-6 (7/4), 6-4 in an all-French quarterfinal.

Monfils will now take on Radu Albot in the semi-final, after the Romanian got the better of Marcos Baghdatis in another quarter-final match.
