The 1992 "Red Five" Williams-Renault that Nigel Mansell drove to the World Driving Championship will be offered for sale at Bonhams auction scheduled for July 5 during the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the auction company announced Wednesday.

After Mansell drove FW14B chassis 08 to five wins and one second-place finish in seven races, he handed the vehicle over to his teammate Riccardo Patrese, who swapped the red 5 on the nose for a white 6.

Bonhams auctioning company have revealed the vehicle will not be offered for sale until July 5 when Goodwood gets underway.

Bonhams director of global motorsport Mark Osborne is a big fan of the vehicle and its place in the country's motorsport history.

"This vehicle contributed more towards the championship in 1992 over any other auto".

This is not the first time an F1 auto with such provenance has been sold by Bonhams.

At its Monaco sale past year, chassis six of the 1993 McLaren MP4/8s - the vehicle which Ayrton Senna drove to his sixth and finale victory in the principality - and the Toleman-Hart TG184-2 which Senna drove in the famous rain-soaked 1984 race to finish second to Alain Prost were also sold.

He won the bidding at €4.1million, equivalent to £3.6m at the time. "As a young man I, along with a nation, was in patriotic awe of the brilliance of the British Williams cars, and of Red 5 in particular", he tells GRR.

"But the MP4/8 wasn't a high point in McLaren design". The FW14B in question has since been restored to Mansell's championship-winning livery.
