New measles cases confirmed in Texas, Washington

Officials say vaccinations levels are falling in several Texas counties, and anything below a 95 percent vaccination rate is considered risky.

The vaccines include MMR, which protects against measles, mumps and rubella, and MMR-V, which also protects against the varicella-zoster virus, which causes chickenpox. The Houston Chronicle reports health officials were told the four children who fell ill had received their first of two measles vaccines.

Measles symptoms include a fever, a dry cough, a runny nose, a sore throat and inflamed eyes. Severe complications include pneumonia, which can be fatal, and encephalitis (swelling of the brain), which can lead to convulsions, hearing loss, and intellectual disabilities in children. At least 34 people affected are children between 1 and 10.

The decision not to vaccinate is one that many in the medical field, including Dr. Bill Mostow, strongly disagrees with, as it can leave that population vulnerable to diseases like the measles. The second is given between the ages of 4 and 6.

"Before the measles vaccine, we had an increase in measles, and then, when the measles vaccine was created, it started getting more and more people vaccinated", Beckham said.

"There should be no barriers, you can get immunizations without paying, you can go to sliding-fee scales, you can go to the county health departments", she said. This is why measles outbreaks are occurring in Ireland and across Europe.

Washington state Rep. Paul Harris, R-Vancouver, has introduced a measure that would remove personal-belief exemptions for the MMR vaccine.

If you have signs or symptoms of measles please contact your healthcare provider. Here's what you need to know. This is because you might be infectious to others at the GP surgery.

To prevent further infections, people who are diagnosed with measles are advised to stay away from school, college, work, and public places for four days following the onset of their rash.
