"One of the patients just had a baby and we had no idea she was pregnant", the unidentified nurse exclaimed during her call with 911 operators.

The nurse initially says the woman is stable but the infant is not breathing and is turning blue. "We were not expecting this".

The San Carlos Apache Tribe said in a statement to NBC affiliate KPNX of Phoenix that the woman is a 29-year-old member of the tribe, and that she has been in a persistent vegetative state and coma for over a decade.

According to reports, the staff were not aware that the patient was pregnant or in labor until they heard moaning and "she was pretty much giving birth".

The mother could actually lose weight in other places like her face or arms if a fetus is consuming nutrients, Huls added.

"A good way to understand it is that really, the baby's going to continue to grow even at the expense of the mom's nutrition", Huls told the AP.

He did not reveal the conditions of the patient and her child, who have since been taken in by family. "There may be changes to her body that are going to go undetected in a chronic care condition or at a facility like this".

The revelation that a woman in a vegetative state was raped inside a care facility has horrified advocates for people with disabilities and the community at large. The provider's CEO resigned this week, and the state said the center has made safety changes.

Court documents revealed that the woman received a medical exam almost nine months before giving birth, during which the doctor who examined her found "no change" in her health, according to the form, noting the exam was external only.

The woman's mother, who is now her legal guardian, submitted an annual report as required by state law that included the results of a physical that was conducted on April 16 at the facility.

The new mom has been a patient at Hacienda Healthcare since she was 3 years old, according to KPHO.

A police investigation is now underway to determine how exactly the pregnancy came to be.

"She was not in a position to give consent to any of this", Thompson said.

The woman and the baby boy have been recovering at a hospital. Women in a vegetative state after accidents or strokes have successfully delivered babies, Huls said.

The family's attorney has said they are 'outraged, traumatized and in shock by the abuse and neglect of their daughter at Hacienda HealthCare.' The family will care for the baby, the attorney said.

In recent days police have addressed the media to give more information about the sexual assault investigation now underway, after they were alerted to the birth.

Police are treating the case as a sexual assault investigation and have begun gathering DNA from men who work at the facility.

It also remains unclear if anyone had noticed if the woman had stopped menstruating.

'We need help, please, ' a nurse yelled at the dispatcher, who tried to calm the nurse and get the address of the facility.

Officers responded on December 29 to a call of an infant in distress who had been delivered at the long-term care facility in the area of 16th Street and South Mountain Avenue.
