Despite Fabregas flying to Monaco to finalise the move on Sunday, Chelsea had been stalling on a deal until the club could find a replacement.

Fabregas has signed a contract until 2022 with Monaco and will wear the No.44 shirt, with his usual No.4 already taken.

He has signed a three-and-a-half-year deal with Monaco, who are 19th in Ligue 1 and coached by his former Arsenal teammate Thierry Henry.

Do you think Fabregas made the right decision to join Monaco?

"The group is quality with young players and a young coach". I'm here to help the team. "I am very excited".

The Spanish playmaker won two Premier League titles at Chelsea under two different managers, Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte, as well as lifting the FA Cup and League Cup.

The 31-year-old Spaniard captained the Blues in the FA Cup against Nottingham Forest on Saturday and was in tears as he applauded fans at the final whistle.

Cup matches have offered Fabregas the main chance to impress under Maurizio Sarri, with Jorginho's arrival in the summer forcing Fabregas down the pecking order in terms of midfield places.

The Premier League club are understood to be interested in deals for Cagliari midfielder Nicolo Barella and Zenit St Petersburg midfielder Leandro Paredes.

He joined Chelsea from Barcelona in 2014, having played 303 times for Arsenal between 2003 and 2011.

"We are convinced that his experience at the highest level will bring a lot to our players on and off the field".
