Police in Salinas, Calif., were left baffled after viewing security camera footage of a man licking an intercom's doorbell button over a three-hour period early Saturday morning.

"This weirdo showed up at our front porch last night about 2am", the homeowners wrote in a public post accompanying the video, posted to Ring.com, the website of the company that hosts their security alert system.

Dungan and her husband were not home at the time, but their kids were. I go, 5:00 in the morning?

"It didn't take us long to identify the individual", police department spokesperson Miguel Cabrera said, according to ABC13. My son doesn't get home till 6am.

Roberto Daniel Arroyo, 33, slathered the buzzer with his saliva in freakish footage filmed on his neighbours' front porch in Salinas, California.

Syliva Dungan told KION: "You kind of laugh about it afterwards because, technically, he didn't harm anybody, he didn't break anything".

Surveillance footage recorded a crystal-clear image of Arroyo, allowing authorities to quickly identify him.

"It's probably the weirdest (case) I've heard in many years", he said. Arroyo hung out in the doorway for more than two hours, moving in and out of the camera's frame, Cabrera said. Police said he prowled a neighbor's house as well.

The family also made clear that they had gone to great efforts to clean the affected doorbell.

The Monterey County District Attorney's Office will decide whether to charge Arroyo, officials said.
