They sold 750,000 examples of the previous generation. The German company will be hoping for similar success with the latest generation!

The second-gen, which sits on the automaker's Modular Front Architecture (MFA2) platform that also underpins the W177 A-Class, is a larger auto than its predecessor. A larger stabiliser bar and optional active adaptive damping which should ensure that it drives extremely well. Since the first-gen's debut back in 2013, the CLA has been incredibly successful and it stands to reason that this new one will be even more so.

Gets the interiors from the 2018 A-Class. The side windows appear narrower this time and the rear looks cleaner with smaller rear tail lights. The only other sedan with a better drag coefficient is the A-Class sedan (0.22).

The new CLA is longer and wider, but the roof is lower.

For a few years now, Mercedes-Benz and Audi have been the only premium brands in compact premium sedan segment, with the CLA-Class and A3, respectively.

Under the hood at the moment is the 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine producing 225bhp/350 Nm and mated to 7G-DCT dual-clutch transmission.

Mercedes performance arm AMG is also working on a range-topping CLA 45 model, featuring the most highly tuned, 421hp version of the M260 2.0-litre petrol engine. There will also be a manual transmission option, as well as 4Matic all-wheel drive capability for the new CLA.

The biggest change is inside though.

Overall, the new Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class seems like it will be a huge hit here in the 'States.

For its initial launch in the United States, the all-new CLA only gets one engine option for the meantime.

When it arrives in the USA, the 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA250 will be equipped as standard with the automaker's MBUX infotainment system that offers personal assistant features, similar to home smart speaker or smartphone functions. The voice recognition technology is improved and now recognises more complex commands. It apparently also has the ability to understand who called it and can filter out any other voices in the cabin, so as to not get confused by other people talking. Flip a "v" at the centre console and MBUX will also access a personal favourites menu.

Alongside the new tech Mercedes-Benz offers in the form of MBUX are a variety of additional packages.

Also on offer here is a smart new gesture control system that can detect whether the driver or passenger is using it, while Merc's Energising Coach takes the Mercedes-Benz climate, massage, lighting and musical "wellness programme" a step further by syncing with and making recommendations based on data from certain compatible Garmin wearables, including the new Mercedes-Benz vivoactive 3 Smartwatch that also made its debut at the CES show. The twin power bulges in the hood hark back to the 300SL Gullwing sports vehicle.
