The smart home is getting smarter and more complete as increasing numbers of devices become available.

From a UI perspective the device can operate exactly as any Google Home speaker can, with voice control, including multi-cast speaker groups and access to the Google Assistant verbal smart home controls and routines.

Lenovo in collaboration with Google has announced its first smart clock powered by Google Assistant at the CES 2019.

The Smart Clock is a tiny smart display, with a 4-inch IPS screen and a 6W speaker.

Now the cards seem limited to a few functions, time / clock, setting alarms, what's next on your Google Calendar, weather and commute updates.

That USB port is a smart addition to the clock. It is also much cheaper than the Home Hub, priced at $80. And at $79, the Smart Clock significantly undercuts Amazon's Echo Spot, which costs $129.

Here's one of the funky clock faces.

The Smart Clock's interface is a low-key affair. It's not an epic soundsystem - but as a bedside "radio" it's suited to objective to get your day started with some tunes, should you so wish. There are physical controls to adjust the volume if you don't want to bark instructions at Google Assistant using your voice.

On the back of the petite device it is possible to see the power port, a USB Type-A port, and an on/off switch for the microphone, in case you don't want Google Assistant listening in to your night-time ruminations.

The real beauty in the Smart Clock is how it integrates with other smart products. And it'll likely only get smarter in the future with routings and timings based on additional data.

The device, which can easily sit on a bedside table in an unobtrusive manner, can offer the kind of information that people would expect from a Smart Clock. It's due to launch in the U.S. in their Spring with a retail price of $79.99 which would see it priced around the $120 AUD mark if / when it makes it here.
