The world's wealthiest man, Jeff Bezos, announced a divorce from his wife of 25 years, MacKenzie Bezos, on Twitter on Wednesday morning.

Jeff Bezos was ranked the richest man in the world in 2018 by Forbes, which reports he is now worth more than $136 billion.

In this case, that includes Amazon, which Bezos founded soon after marrying MacKenzie.

The couple married in 1993 after they met at hedge fund DE Shaw in NY, where they both worked.

Bezos and MacKenzie announced in a statement on the billionaire's Twitter account that they had made a decision to continue their "shared lives as friends".

The couple have four children.

Amazon shares were up 0.2 per cent in midday trading on Wednesday. While not directly related to the operation of Amazon, a divorce for its founder could impact the company's future. Both Bezos and MacKenzie signed the announcement that ended with a vow to remain "cherished friends".

The divorce, which could become one of the most expensive in history, could potentially affect Bezos's stake in Amazon.

"My office was next door to his, and all day long I listened to that fabulous laugh", she told Vogue in a 2013 interview, the year she and Bezos married. That left Amazon with a market value of $US811 billion, more than any other publicly traded company in the US.

A stockholders agreement stipulated they would vote jointly on company matters, including stock sale, but Elaine filed court documents in 2016 to get control of her shares after she was voted off the Wynn Resorts' board of directors.

"When you have loving and supportive people in your life, like MacKenzie, my parents, my grandfather, my grandmother, you end up being able to take risks", he said. Last year, the couple announced their first joint philanthropic effort-which pledged $2 billion to build preschools and help homeless families.

He had solicited ideas on Twitter in 2017 for ways to donate some of his wealth.

In 2012, the couple donated US$2.5 million to a Washington state campaign to legalise same-sex marriage there.

The billionaire, from Albuquerque, New Mexico, is the founder of Amazon. In his spare time, Bezos also oversees Blue Origin as he competes with Elon Musk's SpaceX in a private sector space race.
