Oscar victor Kate Winslet (Avatar 2, Blackbird) and Oscar nominee Saoirse Ronan (Mary Queen of Scots) will be starring in the romance-drama Ammonite, Deadline has confirmed.

While there she meets Mary Anning - a real-life British paleontologist from the 1800s - and the two embark on an intense relationship that will change their lives. Anning is credited with making key scientific discoveries in the Jurassic marine fossil beds in the cliffs along the English Channel.

"Ammonite" is a See-Saw Films production by Iain Canning and Emile Sherman, whose credits include "Widows", "Lion" and "The King's Speech, alongside Fodhla Cronin O'Reilly ("Lady Macbeth")".

"Set in a United Kingdom coastal town in the 1840s, the drama will follow the unlikely romance between paleontologist Mary Anning (Winslet) and a London woman (Ronan) of means to whom she must unexpectedly play nursemaid", according to Deadline.

Saoirse's casting may have came as a surprise because she recently revealed she planned to take a long break after her challenging lead role in "Mary Queen of Scots".

The actresses are in safe hands with Ammonite director Francis Lee, following the critical acclaim he received for his directorial debut in God's Own Country in 2017. The movie is set to start filming in March.
