Doctor Who fans face a lean 2019 once the credits have rolled on the Jodie Whittaker-starring New Year's Day Special, as the sci-fi show's 12th season will not air until 2020.

Whittaker is the first female Doctor and her performance has attracted positive reviews, although there has been some criticism that the series' storylines have become too politically correct. America has an answer, and unfortunately, Season 12 will be delayed until 2020.

Doctor Who boss and head writer Chris Chibnall says work has already begun on the 12th series.

'We're off again! Well we never actually stopped, ' the Broadchurch creator said. The corporation also confirmed that Whittaker's costars - Bradley Walsh, Mandip Gill, and Tosin Cole - will also be coming back for the next run of shows.

Jodie's first episode as the Doctor launched with a consolidated audience of 11 million, making it the second biggest drama this year across all channels.

She is following on in the footsteps of some incredible names - including Peter Capaldi, Matt Smith and David Tennant - and has been smashing it so far.

Before Chibnall signed up, the show had been criticised in recent years for featuring storylines which were too convoluted.

Lizo Mzimba, the BBC's entertainment correspondent, said while there was "a recognition that fans might want a series every single year, Doctor Who has nearly uniquely complex filming requirements and a lengthy post-production period".

'I know Chris and the whole team are already working on a whole new set of exciting adventures.

"I really can't wait to step back in and get to work again", Whittaker told The Hollywood Reporter. "It's been an extraordinary journey so far and I'm not quite ready to hand it over yet".

The advert spilled a tease for the New Year's Day special, but also left fans upset.
