Lionel Messi "only has one skill", according to Brazil legend Pele, with fellow Argentine Diego Maradona "much better" than the Barcelona talisman.

Pele, 78, is widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers to have played the game with an incredible record of 1281 goals in 1363 games throughout his illustrious career that spanned over two decades.

"How can you compare?" he told Folha de Sao Paulo.

However, the Selecao star has previously declared his belief that compatriot Neymar is a better player than both Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, and he duly affirmed: "If you look around the world, the ones who stand out are Messi, Ronaldo and Neymar".

Pele's comments are particularly weird given that he's praised Messi in the past and said he was the best player "in the past 10 years" when asked in 2015.

"How are you going to compare someone who headed well and kicked a football with his left and right foot with someone who only used one foot, only had one skill and didn't head well?", Pele asked.

"[Franz] Beckenbauer, [Johan] Cruyff are also better".

Pele won the Ballon d'Or seven times while he was also named FIFA's Player of the Century.

Pele also said fellow Brazilian Neymar is a "better player" than France's World Cup victor, Kylian Mbappe.

He then went on to say that for him, Maradona is a lot better than Messi: "As far as I'm concerned, Maradona was one of the best players ever".

"It is hard to defend Neymar for all the things he does outside of football", Pele said. "I spoke with him and reminded him of his ability".

Proceeding to describe his fellow countryman Neymar as being better than his club-mate and World Cup victor Kylian Mbappe, Pele also made note of his admiration Franz Beckenbauer and Johann Cruyff.

"I've been with him in Europe twice".
