Jake Gyllenhaal has at last confirmed he's in Spider-Man: Far From Home, months after his casting was first reported. Here's Gyllenhaal's post on Instagram (his very first!), where he realises he's not playing Spider-Man...

He captioned the video: "I just realised I'm not playing Spider-Man".

The eight-second video shows Gyllenhaal holding up Amazing Spider-Man #311 (a classic), which featured Mysterio's return to the Wall-Crawler's life. However, the actor and the studio behind the upcoming superhero film have been mum on the topic. "That's what it feels like when you're working".

In the comments section, his Spider-Man: Far From Home co-star Zendaya posted applause emoji while fellow Marvel star Mark Ruffalo wrote, "same" along with a sad face emoji. It's now unclear which incarnation of Mysterio Gyllenhaal will be portraying. A special effects expert, Quentin Beck used his talents to create elaborate illusions to commit crimes and to fight Spider-Man.

Anyone who's seen "Avengers: Infinity War" knows (spoiler alert!) that several of Earth's mightiest heroes were turned to dust when Thanos (Josh Brolin) finally completed his gauntlet and snapped his fingers, effectively killing half of the inhabitants of the galaxy, including Spider-Man (Tom Holland). Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, two of the screenwriters behind the first movie, are back as well.

Spider-Man: Far From Home is a sequel to 2017's Spider-Man: Homecoming and is due to be released in July 2019.
