Charleston Salvation Army struggling to get donations

Major Robert Doliber with the Salvation Army says the bell ringer hadn't show up for his shift when the theft occurred and doesn't believe there much money was in the stolen kettle. This coin's value goes a long way in helping them meet that goal.

At the start of this week, donations were down in the Roanoke Valley by over $50,000 compared to this time previous year.

Typically donations are low because people don't carry cash, but that's not the cause locally. "We have a 31-bed shelter here in town, a food pantry, utility, rental assistance program and many others as well", White said.

"What I'm telling my bell ringers and my volunteers is that it's a real sign of approval", he said.

After the game, Elliott and Prescott pledged $21,000 donations to the Salvation Army, which the Cowboys have matched. Once the kettle comes loose, they take the kettle and run off.

Elliott was fined $13,369 for "donating" $21 into the Salvation Army kettle after scoring a touchdown on Thanksgiving Day at AT&T Stadium. They cover the seven counties listed above, but you can only find kettles in Putnam, Kanawha, Roane, and Logan counties.
