She had been in South America with friends previously but set off on her own to New Zealand where she was staying at Base Backpackers in Auckland.

"We are working with the family in the United Kingdom and New Zealand Police in relation to reports of a missing British national in New Zealand", McLeod said.

When her messages stopped Saturday and she didn't respond to birthday well-wishes the following day, alarm bells rang.

Grace Millane is a 22-year-old woman from Essex, UK who arrived in New Zealand about two weeks ago.

"Grace has been missing for 5 days", her brother Michael Millane posted on Facebook on Tuesday.

"Initial enquiries are underway at this stage".

"It was what she wanted - she wanted to see the world", Mr Millane said.

Mr Millane told Sky News their father was due to fly out on Wednesday evening and that they are receiving assistance from United Kingdom and New Zealand authorities.

His sister last spoke to a family member on Thursday, and had not put anything on social media since.

Miss Millane's family, from Wickford, near Basildon, reported her missing to New Zealand police, who are now investigating the disappearance.

"Her phone just goes straight to voicemail", he said.

British High Commission Wellington consular manager Tony McLeod said the commission was aware of reports of a missing British national.
