For example, the iPhone Xs is available starting at $979 through the federal program, but is priced starting at $899 on the military site.

Apple has launched a dedicated online storefront for active military personnel and veterans - complete with a 10-percent discount offer on Apple products. The discount is greater than the 2 to 6 percent discount offered in its Education Store for students, teachers and academic staff members.

But the new discount program, which started December 3, kicks it up a notch, extending a blanket 10 percent discount on items bought directly through the company's online military and veteran store homepage.

"We are deeply grateful to the men and women of our armed forces", Apple said in a statement provided toAppleInsider. And AirPod headphones, which go for $159 in the company's stores or at other retail locations, are $143 on the military site. The iPhone 8 and iPhone 7 are also offered at a discounted price, but the iPhone XS Max doesn't get a price drop. However, eligible customers are limited to purchasing up to three unlocked iPhone devices, three iPad devices and three Macs for each calendar year.

Immediate family members in the same household can also take advantage of Apple's new "Veterans and Military Purchase Program". What the company will do to stop potential abuse isn't totally clear. Apple dropped the iPhone XR pricetag from $749 to $674.

If you don't qualify for the discount, but want access to cheaper Apple products, you can consider buying a refurbished product from the company.
