Much of Underwood's damaged face was removed and the space left behind was carefully matched with the donor's face. The northern California man whose suicide attempt left his face horribly disfigured had successful facial transplant surgery in early 2018.

About a year after Cameron Underwood underwent the most advanced face transplant surgery ever performed, the 26-year-old is revealing his new look. He is golfing and has even gone skydiving, The Sacramento Bee reported Friday.

"There have been so many awesome advances in surgery". I'm living proof of that. Underwood had struggled for years with depression, and in 2016, he placed a shotgun under his chin and pulled the trigger.

"Our team has established a successful, novel, patient-donor matching protocol and immune suppression regimen that we believe provides the best outcomes for our patients because the risk of rejection and toxicity is greatly minimized", said Dr. Bruce E. Gelb, a transplant surgeon at NYU Langone who also participated with other surgeons in Underwood's transplant surgery.

The surgery was preformed by a group of around 100 medical professionals at New York University (NYU) Langone from New York City. He had listed himself as an organ donor.

Rodriguez estimated about three to five years until his face is "pristine".

Underwood's body has shown no signs of rejecting the transplanted face so far, Rodriguez said.

Cameron Underwood, of Yuba City, California, flew to NY city in January to receive his new face after a donor was found after only six months of waiting, the shortest wait on record so far.

The face transplant, performed in January, took 25 hours.
