People lined up in the rain Tuesday morning to be among the first customers at the first two legal pot shops on the U.S. East Coast, more than two years after MA voters approved of recreational marijuana for adults.

Robert Golembeski, left, of Chepachet R.I., compares his driver license with that of another customer as they wait outside the Cultivate cannabis dispensary to purchase recreational marijuana on the first day of legal sales, Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2018, in Leicester, Mass.

MA residents are probably more thankful than ever this Thanksgiving since the USA state has opened its first-ever weed shop today, CBS reports.

Mayor David Narkewicz was the ceremonial first customer at New England Treatment Access in Northampton, a small city in the western part of the state known for its eclectic mix of culture.

"The Maine Department of Public Safety neither promulgates nor administers any rules applicable to either medicinal or recreational use of marijuana", Maine State Police attorney Christopher Parr said.

Now that the two stores are open, the Cannabis Control Commission will continue to process license applications for more stores.

MA residents voted to legalize the use, distribution and cultivation of recreational marijuana in a 2016 referendum.

They were the first to be green-lit by state regulators to sell recreational pot to adults 21 and older. Vermont allows adults to use marijuana has no provisions for legal sale.

"It's my first day of Thanksgiving vacation, and I'm here, and I wouldn't want it any other way", she said.

In Leicester, about an hour east of Northampton, the rain also couldn't hold back eager customers awaiting the opening of Cultivate.

Mandile, a founder of the nonprofit advocacy group Veterans Alternative Healing told The Boston Globe it was "an honor" and that he bought a pre-rolled joint and an eighth of "Jack Kerr".
