Public records show the mansion that burned Tuesday is owned by Keith Caneiro, 50, and Jennifer Caneiro, 45. Local news agencies reported that the two homes were owned by family members.

When asked if the two fires were connected, Gramiccioni said, "That remains to be seen but that is an angle we continue to pursue".

"There was one body that was found out in front of the home".

The identities of the deceased were not immediately released.

Officials refused to say if an early morning fire in Ocean County was related to the Colts Neck fire.

He did not say whether the incident was a murder-suicide.

The fire at an estate on Willow Brook Road was first reported at around 1:30 p.m. Firefighters continued to fight the blaze for hours and the airspace was shut down. Video showed smoke pouring from the roof while the mansion was ablaze.

More than 20 fire departments tackled the blaze at the mansion, worth $1.5 million (£1.2 million).

Sources also confirmed that a second fire occurred at the home of the brother of one of the mansion's residents in Ocean Township.

"Unfortunately, they were burned severely as a result of the fire they were exposed to, so that's making things somewhat challenging with the medical examination that needs to ensue", Gramiccioni told reporters.

Police officials during the press conference said that there was no history of domestic violence or police calls to the home that they knew of.

'He said, "I'm in complete shock, I can't believe this is happening to me".

"We're working with the prosecutor's office", Ocean Township Police Lt. Timothy Torchia told the outlet. They would not confirm if the two fires were linked. Everyone at the Ocean Township home was evacuated safely.

Paul Caneiro is listed as the vice president of the company.

It is now unclear whether those victims were also shot dead, or died in the subsequent blaze, NBC10 reported.

Colts Neck is a well-to-do community about 80km south of New York City and is home to horse farms.

The area is home to Bruce Springsteen, as well as comedian and former The Daily Show host Jon Stewart.
