Smith to sit while Cavs look for trade

Initially, it appeared that shipping out Thomas and Crowder at last year's trade deadline and bringing in Rodney Hood, George Hill, Jordan Clarkson and Larry Nance Jr., in addition to having Kevin Love, Sexton, Tristan Thompson and up-and-comer Cedi Osman would allow the Cavs to potentially compete for an Eastern Conference postseason birth. However, he remains onboard. Because of this, Smith's contract has a measure of value in trade next summer and because of this the Cavs have been reluctant to buy Smith out, sources said. Smith doesn't now have a relationship with Koby Altman. The two sides are not now considering a buyout arrangement, sources said.

"I don't think the goal is to win", Smith told The Athletic. "I don't like the statement of getting bought out".

At the beginning of this season, Cavs management told the fans that the team would be competitive with a playoff mindset.

At 2-13, the Cleveland Cavaliers now have the worst record in the National Basketball Association.

Smith's contract is grandfathered in to a quirk in the collective bargaining agreement allowing for his full salary in the 2019-20 season to be counted in possible trades.

It will be fascinating to see what else James opens up about as his years in Cleveland begin to fade further and further into the past.

We know that James' relationship with Gilbert was icy to say the least, particularly after the now-infamous scathing letter written in Comic Sans font after James bolted for Miami years ago.

The Cavs are also looking to trade shooting guard Kyle Korver and are expected to do just that within the next month or two. A streaky shooter, he could be a fine addition to any team in need of outside scoring.

Seeing LeBron play in Quicken Loans Arena again will provide highlight moments, but knowing that potentially Irving and James could still be in the Wine and Gold will always hurt, considering Cleveland could have handled the Irving trade request so much better. Ti-off is set for 8:00 p.m. EST with ESPN having live broadcast coverage.
