Chicago police search Mercy hospital after reported shooting incident

A witness named James Gray told Chicago television station ABC 7 that he saw multiple people shot: "It looked like he was turning and shooting people at random".

Anthony Guglielmi, spokesman for Chicago police department, said there were "reports of multiple victims", and added that officers were going throughout the hospital, searching for the gunman.

Update: 5:04 p.m. EDT-One of the people shot during the incident was a Chicago Police Department officer.

Police say the gunman has been shot. Aditia said officers responded quickly and the gunman and the officers exchanged gunfire.

Guglielmi said officers are doing a methodical search of Mercy Hospital & Medical Center on Chicago's south side.

Emergency crews were called to the hospital around 3.20pm and 15 ambulances arrived at the scene.

A hospital employee quoted by the Chicago Tribune said she was in her office when a notice came over a public address system telling those in the hospital to lock their doors.

"I don't know what happened", the unnamed employee told the Tribune.

Nigary Thompson, who works at the hospital's family clinic, said she heard eight or nine shots.

'I am scared as hell.

'This was very close to me. That could have been us back there and if any bullets had pierced the wall we all would have been hurt'.

CBS 2's Charlie De Mar reports a massive police presence near the hospital, and police are asking people to stay away from the area.

TV footage showed people filing out of the hospital into a parking lot with their hands in the air.
